Numbers 2 describes how the Israelites were to camp and travel in the wilderness. At first glance, it seems like a chapter about organization and military formation, but it reveals truths about God’s character and foreshadows Jesus Christ. The main theme is that God is at the center. God instructed each tribe to camp in a specific place around the Tabernacle. The arrangement had Judah, Issachar, Zebulun on the east side. Reuben, Simeon, and Gad were on the south side. Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin on the west side. And finally, Dan, Asher, and Naphtali on the north side. The Tabernacle was in the very center where God’s presence dwelled among His people. God was not simply with Israel. He was to be the center of their lives. Every tribe lived, moved, and traveled with Him at the center. Jesus is at the center of God’s people. Just as the Tabernacle was the center of Israel’s camp, Jesus is now the center of the Church. In the Old Testament God’s presence was in the Tabernacle. In the New Testament God’s presence came in Jesus. John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” The word dwelt literally means “tabernacled.” Jesus became the true dwelling place of God among all of us. Today, we organize our lives around Jesus rather than around ourselves. Everything in the Tabernacle pointed forward to Jesus. The sacrifices pointed to His death, the priests pointed to His role as our High Priest, the mercy seat pointed to His atoning blood, and God’s presence pointed to Emmanuel meaning “God with us.” Whenever Israel broke camp, the tribe of Judah always marched first. This is significant because Jesus came from the tribe of Judah. Genesis 49:10 prophesied that the “scepter” will not depart from Judah. Jesus is called the “Lion of Judah” in Revelation 5:5. Just as Judah led Israel through the wilderness, Jesus leads His people through life and into God’s kingdom. He will also be the leader of God’s army in the end times. Our God is a God of order. This chapter shows so much organization. Every tribe knew where to live, where to march, who they followed, and where they belonged. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14:33 that “God is not a God of disorder but of peace.” Jesus brings order into our lives once marked by sin, confusion, and chaos. Every tribe also had a place. No tribe chose its own location. God assigned each one a place around His presence. Today, all of us have a unique place in the body of Christ. Every one of us have gifts and a purpose, all centered on Christ. This chapter challenges us to ask ourselves Is Jesus truly at the center of my life? Do I follow His leadership just like Israel followed God’s presence? Am I serving faithfully in the place God has given me? Am I living in the order and peace Christ provides? Following Jesus means arranging every part of life. We arrange our family, work, finances, relationships, and priorities around Him. Numbers 2:1-34 “The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: “The Israelites are to camp under their respective banners beside the flags of their ancestral families. They are to camp around the tent of meeting at a distance from it: Judah’s military divisions will camp on the east side toward the sunrise under their banner. The leader of the descendants of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab. His military division numbers 74,600. The tribe of Issachar will camp next to it. The leader of the Issacharites is Nethanel son of Zuar. His military division numbers 54,400. The tribe of Zebulun will be next. The leader of the Zebulunites is Eliab son of Helon. His military division numbers 57,400. The total number in their military divisions who belong to Judah’s encampment is 186,400; they will move out first. Reuben’s military divisions will camp on the south side under their banner. The leader of the Reubenites is Elizur son of Shedeur. His military division numbers 46,500. The tribe of Simeon will camp next to it. The leader of the Simeonites is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. His military division numbers 59,300. The tribe of Gad will be next. The leader of the Gadites is Eliasaph son of Deuel. His military division numbers 45,650. The total number in their military divisions who belong to Reuben’s encampment is 151,450; they will move out second. The tent of meeting is to move out with the Levites’ camp, which is in the middle of the camps. They are to move out just as they camp, each in his place, with their banners. Ephraim’s military divisions will camp on the west side under their banner. The leader of the Ephraimites is Elishama son of Ammihud. His military division numbers 40,500. The tribe of Manasseh will be next to it. The leader of the Manassites is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. His military division numbers 32,200. The tribe of Benjamin will be next. The leader of the Benjaminites is Abidan son of Gideoni. His military division numbers 35,400. The total in their military divisions who belong to Ephraim’s encampment number 108,100; they will move out third. Dan’s military divisions will camp on the north side under their banner. The leader of the Danites is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. His military division numbers 62,700. The tribe of Asher will camp next to it. The leader of the Asherites is Pagiel son of Ochran. His military division numbers 41,500. The tribe of Naphtali will be next. The leader of the Naphtalites is Ahira son of Enan. His military division numbers 53,400. The total number who belong to Dan’s encampment is 157,600; they are to move out last, with their banners.” These are the Israelites registered by their ancestral families. The total number in the camps by their military divisions is 603,550. But the Levites were not registered among the Israelites, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. The Israelites did everything the Lord commanded Moses; they camped by their banners in this way and moved out the same way, each man by his clan and by his ancestral family.”
