This is the story of resurrection morning. Jesus had said before that he was going to be crucified and be raised on the third day before any of this had ever happened. This plan to save God’s people had been put into motion all the way back from the beginning. Jesus even told his disciples in Matthew 20 “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn him to death. They will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged, and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised.” He knew that since sin had entered the world through Adam that the sin barrier had to be broken before we could have a relationship with God through Jesus and that he was the only one that could break down that barrier. We see in this chapter that the Pharisees and the Scribes knew this. They knew that if the word got out about Jesus’s resurrection that everyone would recognize him as the promised Messiah that was said to come so they tried to spread lies and confusion to the people. It was necessary for him to show himself alive to everyone who had seen him killed so that there was no doubt that he the Messiah had come. In Acts 1 it says he walked the earth for 40 days after his resurrection before he ascended to heaven. This proved that he had power over death. (Acts 1:3 “After he had suffered, he also presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.”) This is not just another story or a fairy tale this really happened and the Bible is recorded history all the way back over 6000 years ago showing us how everything that God created led to us having a relationship with him through Jesus. “After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to view the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards were so shaken by fear of him that they became like dead men. The angel told the women, “Don’t be afraid, because I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. For he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there.’ Listen, I have told you.” So, departing quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, they ran to tell his disciples the news. Just then Jesus met them and said, “Greetings! ” They came up, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus told them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there.” As they were on their way, some of the guards came into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. After the priests had assembled with the elders and agreed on a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money and told them, “Say this, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him while we were sleeping.’ If this reaches the governor’s ears, we will deal with him and keep you out of trouble.” They took the money and did as they were instructed, and this story has been spread among Jewish people to this day. The eleven disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but some doubted. Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
