This chapter focuses on how God’s wisdom differs from human wisdom and how the Holy Spirit enables us as believers to understand God’s truth. Paul reminds the Corinthians that when he first came to them, he did not rely on impressive speeches or philosophical arguments. His goal was for their faith to rest on God’s power, not on the persuasive abilities of a human speaker. This was important in Corinth because it was a city that prized rhetoric and philosophy. The gospel’s power is in Christ, not in the charisma or intelligence of any messenger. Paul explains that Christians do speak wisdom, but it is God’s wisdom, not the wisdom of this age. God’s wisdom was planned by God before creation for our glory, it was hidden from the rulers of this world who crucified Jesus because they did not recognize Him, and it is revealed through the Holy Spirit. Verse 9 says, “But as it is written, What no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived — God has prepared these things for those who love him. Paul is saying these truths about God’s plan were once hidden but have now been revealed through the Spirit. Paul compares God’s Spirit to a person’s own spirit. The way we are the only ones who truly know our own thoughts, only the Holy Spirit fully knows God’s thoughts. We as believers have received the Holy Spirit and can now understand the gifts and truths God has given us. Paul emphasizes that these truths are taught by the Spirit rather than merely by human wisdom. Spiritual understanding is a gift from God, not simply the result of education or intellect. Paul describes two kinds of people. The natural person and the spiritual person. The natural person is without the Spirit. The spiritual person is indwelt with the spirit. The natural person does not accept God’s truth because it seems foolish. The spiritual person can discern spiritual realities. This doesn’t mean that we as Christians know everything or are beyond correction. It just means we have the Holy Spirit, who enables us to recognize and understand God’s truth. Paul also says we have the mind of Christ. Having “the mind of Christ” means we as believers are being shaped to think according to Christ’s values, purposes, and perspective through the Holy Spirit. The greatest truth found in the Holy Spirit is the salvation found in Jesus Christ. It cannot be discovered by human wisdom alone. It is revealed by the Holy Spirit, who enables us to understand God’s purposes and to live with the “mind of Christ.” This chapter calls us as Christians to depend on God’s revelation rather than on our own human pride, eloquence, or worldly philosophies. “When I came to you, brothers and sisters, announcing the mystery of God to you, I did not come with brilliance of speech or wisdom. I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. My speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of wisdom but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not be based on human wisdom but on God’s power. We do, however, speak a wisdom among the mature, but not a wisdom of this age, or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. On the contrary, we speak God’s hidden wisdom in a mystery, a wisdom God predestined before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age knew this wisdom, because if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written, What no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived — God has prepared these things for those who love him. , Now God has revealed these things to us by the Spirit, since the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except his spirit within him? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God. We also speak these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things to spiritual people. But the person without the Spirit does not receive what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it since it is evaluated spiritually. The spiritual person, however, can evaluate everything, and yet he himself cannot be evaluated by anyone. For who has known the Lord’s mind, that he may instruct him? , But we have the mind of Christ.”
